Equipped with a guitar and five years of Spanish classes, twenty-one year old alumnus Evan Craft is taking the Latino music world by storm.
Craft’s fascination with Spanish began in middle school when he took a trimester long class about the Spanish language and culture.
“I wanted to learn Spanish because it’s useful.” Craft said. “And the food is really good.”
While in high school, Craft took Spanish all four years. He was considered a skilled speaker by the time he graduated and knew that he in some way wanted to use his talent.
“He was always very enthusiastic and positive in the classroom,” Hillary Villa, Craft’s former Spanish teacher said.
Knowing Spanish opened up many new opportunities for him in relationships as well as jobs.
“Here in Southern California especially, it’s a great social connection,” Craft said.
After graduating high school in 2009, he attended Moorpark College, Citrus College and Global College. In 2011, Craft traveled to Salamanca, Spain to study abroad. He lived with a family there for three months and traveled to many different regions of Spain. In this time Craft quickly began to adapt to the dialect and the culture of the area.
“I loved that they were very relaxed and passionate people.” Craft said of the people he met while living in Spain.
Besides being a fluent Spanish speaker, Craft devotes much of his time to his music career.
At a young age Craft took an interest in guitar and soon after began singing and composing music. On March 26, 2012, Craft released his first album, titled “Giants.” The album consisted of English, Christian-based music and was produced by Dream Records and Universal Christian Music Group. While the album did gain some hype from the Christian music scene, it did not become immediately popular.
“My English music career has been very frustrating,” Craft said.
However, while in Spain, Craft began writing his first songs in Spanish. His songs eventually turned into an entire Spanish album, titled “Yo Soy Segundo (I am second),” which was released only last month and has received a lot of attention from the Latino music scene. The album currently holds a number one position on the Billboard Christian Latin Album chart, number ten position on the Latin Pop Album chart as well as a number thirty spot in the overall Latin Album Chart, just behind popular Latin singer Shakira.
Craft’s goal for the album is to win a Latin Grammy for Best New Pop Artist.
Next year, Craft is planning to do a tour for the album all around the United States as well as Colombia, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic and many other Spanish-speaking countries. He intends to tour with his friends and fellow musicians Ryan and Sean Cook, also TOHS alumni, as well guitarist Nico Aranda.
“I always thought music would take me places.” Craft said. “But I had no idea it would be places like Latin America.”
Craft continues to work on further advancing his career, and continues to write new music.
