Thousand Oaks High School head coach Ben McEnroe resigned from his position effective immediately on Monday morning.
McEnroe led the Lancer football program for two seasons, during that time he held a 17-9 record and brought the Lancers to back-to-back semi-finals for the first time since 1987-88.
In a meeting Monday morning with players, McEnroe announced his resignation.
Previous to taking the job at Thousand Oaks, McEnroe coached California Lutheran University from 2007 to 2021.
McEnroe’s status was in question in recent weeks. Standout running back Justin Lewis recently transferred to Mater Dei, however, the Lancers are slated to return rising seniors in quarterback Jackson Taylor and tight end Hayden Vercher, plus have added three-star tight end rising senior Kaden Glover, who has made noise as a recruit at multiple Division 1 FBS schools.
“The biggest thing is shock because we knew what was going to go on after this past year, we were given the confirmation that we were going to get another year [of McEnroe],” Taylor said. “I think everybody breathed that sigh of relief and now for something like this to happen and come out of nowhere it’s pretty shocking.”
McEnroe spoke with The Lancer but couldn’t discuss the circumstances of his resignation.
In October, parents from the junior varsity Lancer football team voiced their concerns with his coaching style.
“It is unfortunate the circumstances that surrounded the reason for the decision; hopefully, people will know everything I’ve done here has been out of love for our student-athletes to help them develop and grow as men,” McEnroe said. “There comes a point in time you’ve got to stand up and protect your family and that’s what I’m doing.”
According to Tarek Fattal, Sports Illustrated high school writer, McEnroe has accepted a head coach position at Heritage Christian High School in Northridge.
