Last week, the seniors in Health Science Majors hosted a showcase, featuring various professions that they hope to pursue in the future. At the showcase were health science professionals who graded the students’ presentations and guests who came to support the seniors.
“I was inspired by the diversity of all the things they were talking about,” junior Alyssa Hunnicutt said. “They were all thinking about such different things, and I think that’s reflective of how vast the health science industry is.”
As a junior, Hunnicutt is preparing for her own presentation that she will showcase next year. Since she is still unsure of what particular career path she wants to research in depth, she looked to the seniors’ presentation for inspiration.
One of these sources of inspiration was senior Kylie Martin, who chose to pursue nursing after her grandma’s hospitalization.
“When my grandma was admitted to the hospital, I expected that she was gonna be scared and nervous, but when I actually went there, she was sitting up and smiling and telling a story to one of the nurses,” Martin said. “[The nurse] revitalized my grandma’s life and made her last months better, and I wanted to do the same and support someone like how my grandma’s nurse supported me.”
For Martin, the showcase is especially important to her because it gives her an opportunity to meet people in the healthcare field with similar values and aspirations.
“All these doctors and nurses were coming around, telling me that they appreciate that I’m becoming a nurse because nurses are needed a lot in the healthcare field. It helped me feel good about what I’m doing because I know that so many other people support it,” Martin said.
